We define milestones for major tasks accomplished, and a single level of detail for each milestone.
M1: "Going Public"
- Proposal put up on DUCS website
- Project announcement on noticeboards
- Seminar on the CRAVE project
- Project Support Infrastructure setup begins:
- Website/blogs
- Mailing lists
- Wiki
- Issue tracking system
M2: "Ready to Go"
- Teams formed
- Project Support Infrastructure Training for all teams
- Assignment of Individual Tasks to teams, typically research work
M3: H/W Configuration, Verification and Testing
- Hardware map of lab prepared
- What hardware is present?
- What is needed?
- What can each hardware be used for?
- Allocation of hardware resources complete
- Documented in Wiki
- Seminar on H/W in lab and soon-to-be in Lab.
M4: Multimedia OS Installed
- OS's selected
- Machines prepared
- Test installation complete
- Explorations of mass rollout of OSes
- Mass OS rollout
- OS functionality reviewed
- Documentation on Local OS practices
- Seminar on O/S selection, installation, and operation
M5: Cluster Installation
- Options explored
- distcc rollout
- distcc testing and evaluation
- grid rollout

- testing of functionality
- documentation regarding usage

M6: Transcoding
- Select programs/utilities to install
- Install selected programs
- Write a uniform interface to convert between file formats easily and safely.
- Recommend file formats for use in daily work.
- Document all of this.

M7: Publication & Archival
- Select programs/utilities to install
- Install, configure and test those programs.
- Document usage of these facilities
- Seminar on Publication and Archival.
M8: Content Creation & Manipulation
Split into AUDIO,VISUAL,VIRTUAL and PRINT
- Select programs/utilities to install
- Install, configure and test those programs
- Seminar and training on each tools
M9: Project Delivery
- Publicity videos finished
- All facilities tested, documented, and ready for use.
Note that while each layer depends on the layer below it, we can
easily begin work on M3--M8 simultaneously.
The Lab should be in a working condition by middle of February 2007, and completely ready by May 2007.
