Open Source Software Week

Open Source Software(OSS) Week 2008 is held on 3rd week of October from 13th to 18th October. The aim of the program is to introduce the Students & Staff to Open Source technology. This will also serve as a platform for introducing the freshers to Open Source thereby getting new CRAVE members.
The OSS Week will be an in depth introduction to Open Source Softwares, here attendees will be shown how to use the softwares for day to day work. Guidance will be given as to how to go about learning the advance concepts.

Linux Workshop
In this session focus will be on introducing the attendees to different Linux distributions. It would help them compare the advantages and disadvantages of various distributions. Linux architecture, file systems, partitioning will be the other topics to be covered. Students will learn to install Ubuntu Linux distro on virtual machines using VMWARE.

3D Animations
The 3D Animation application used was Blender. Blender is an Open Source Application. It can be downloaded from its official site [1]. The workshop covered the Basic concepts of Modelling, Texturing and Lighting... by the end of the workshop students were able to create a 3D model of crystal glass.

Programming & Web Development
The attendies will be introduced to the various IDE's available for programming such as Code::Blocks for C,C++ , Eclipse and Netbeans for Java.
In Web development emphasis will be on how to set up a server, database, etc in Linux. Apache and MySQL will be used in this case. A general introduction to CMS softwares will be taken.

Graphic Designing
The Application demonstrated in this workshop was Inkscape. Inkscape is an Open Source 2D designing tool based on Vector Graphics. It can be downloaded from its official website [2]. There was an indepth demonstration of its each tool with examples of different graphic works from artists around the world, explored. Students were also given the tips and tricks on making complex graphic designs.

LaTeX Workshop
LaTeX is a document preparation system for high quality typesetting. LaTeX is most widely used by mathematicians, scientists, engineers, scholars, philosophers in academia and the commercial world, and other professionals.

Open Office Suite & Gaming
Open Office is an alternate to MS Office suite with added features like converting to PDF. An Introduction to Open Office was done followed by a session on Gaming in Linux.
