Video Documentary Film2008
From CRAVEwiki
The project was initiated to test raw video footage editing skills of the CRAVE Video Editing Department. The project is temporarily halted till June 20, 2008 and will continued by a new team. The script and layout of the video was finalized by the team and management.
It was observed the Blender VSE is not capable of handling live captured video that effectively. (Jahashaka was also tested but proved to be less useful) An article was discovered which stated that for best results and productions in video editing on Linux Platform was using Open Movie Editor, KDENlive and Blender VSE together. This finding will be tested by the new team once the project is initiated.

Objectives
The documentary film aims to encourage students and staff members of DBIT to join the organizations. It does this by explaining the frame work and structure the organization follows. It also emphasizes the benefits and way it functions.
Script and Layout
Think about your favorite video/computer game or cartoon for a minute. Close your eyes and create a picture of it in your mind. What colors do you see? What sounds do you hear? What kinds of motion do you see? What are the words on the display? Lots of different things are happening all at the same time, aren’t they? You see colors and characters and movement while hearing voices, music and sound effects. You’re using multimedia!
Welcome to the world of multimedia..
In today's fast changing world, the role of multimedia has changed. From being an innovator’s dream to a phenomenal reality. Multimedia is present everywhere and has become an integral part of our lives, be it in presentations to make them more impressive, animations or special effects in videos. Multi-channel television, the popularity of computer games, the internet and the newfound opportunities for cross-platform exploitation have all contributed to the phenomenal growth . Awareness and effective application of multimedia tools proffers students with a competitive edge in the global market.
Don Bosco Institute Of Technology is a salesian initaiative that seeks to provide its students with a sound engineering foundation so that they contribute to technology and society. It provides facilities and opportunities that not only ensures a B.E. Degree but trains and guides students to exploit their potential.
DUCS
An exemplification of this thought is DUCS. DUCS (DBIT Undergrad Computer Society) is a student body which aimed to pursue technical activities above and beyond the scope of the curriculum. It is a volunteer-based society consisting of DBIT students and faculty. Its mission is to provide both infrastructure and support for technical projects of the institute and students. It began by providing technical support to the system administrators of the institute and working on e-learning based projects which are still used by the institute.
DUCS believes that knowledge should be free to the world. Having said that DUCS has always and will continue to work only on open source and free technologies.
CRAVE
There was a section of DUCS, the Multimedia Special Interest Group called MultiDUCS whose aim was to bring the awareness of the role of multimedia in Information Technology. Because of the successfulness of its implementation, it has gone from being just a project to a full fledged entity called CRAVE. CRAVE is a recursive acronym for CRAVE Research in Audio Visual Engineering.
CRAVE Functioning:
Like DUCS, CRAVE is an organisation for students and by the students.
CRAVE encourages DBIT students to learn and share their knowledge with the fellow team members by working on a live project of their choice or on the one assigned to them. The organisation has created a protocol which works towards the goal of benefiting students and the organisation. Interested students are asked to work on a technical or a creative project which has to be delivered or presented by September 15 or March 15 of the academic year.
To equip these students with the necessary technical skills , DUCS and CRAVE together will organise a one week training course at the beginning of every even semester (after the university examination).
The institute has dedicated a Multimedia Laboratory that thrives on the architecture which is custom designed by CRAVE team. One of the major goals of CRAVE is to establish and provide support to a multimedia production house which runs completely on open source applications. The CRAVE team uses this lab facility to achieve its goals and objectives.
Let us hear about the Vision from the Director of our institute Fr. Mario Vaz.
Rector's Interview
Don Bosco began his work with young people at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. He understood the impact and requirements of this technology and so the need to train young people in skills, so that they would be gainfully employed.
The purpose of setting DUCS at DBIT was to acquaint students with various open source software. The open source provides a path to bridge the digital divide. Knowledge and education which is the backbone of development becomes available to the poor and marginalized through information communication technology. It does make a huge difference. Using open source a child from the slum at a fraction of present costs can learn to use multimedia. And that is wonderful!
Open source is also an ethical way of functioning in this world. Our students who belong to DUCS would not only be immersed in this technology but hopefully would understand how this technology can link and benefit everyone in this world.
Director R&D Interview
Dr. Krishnamoorthy has always supported and guided the DUCS and CRAVE projects. A man of wisdom and great experience, who better than him to speak about the objectives and goals of CRAVE.
Speaking about CRAVE I can firstly say that the lab has come far from its humble beginnings. The main objective of this group is to setup a multimedia production house running only on open source softwares. In CRAVE, we aim at not only just learning the software, which is open source but also the technology behind the software. In the future we hope to achieve the excellence required for developing E-learning solutions for organisations and also guiding Institutions establish similar Multimedia Research Facilities.
Today multimedia is an industry in itself. Multimedia will soon become such an integral part of entertainment, education, business and life that we will take it for granted. Multimedia will be absorbed into the mainstream. In that futuristic view we have started CRAVE.
Departments of CRAVE
After the huge response from students from different branches of the institute, today CRAVE has different departments consisting of students specializing in different fields of multimedia. The various avenues available are:
- System Administration & Networking
- Web Development
- Graphic Designing
- 3D Animation and Modelling
- Video Editing
- Sound Editing
- E – learning & Training Facility
- Research Based Project Development
Benefits of joining CRAVE
Apart from being a part of this research facility which adds to up to your technical skills, it also teaches you to function as a team, a vital skill required for proper functioning of any firm or organisation. CRAVE is the only Computer organisation in DBIT which gets together creativity, innovation and technical expertise all in one big package thus bringing out the artistic and creative talent out of the students. Moreover the guidance of fellow seniors students and faculty in your academic & extracurricular projects makes for a valuable experience.
We hope that this documentary film has presented the details you need to know while making the decision of joining CRAVE.
